A Kinetic Opera
Exhibited at Østfold Kunstseneter 2024.

A Kinetic Opera: Video performative installation with a looped running sequence of 15 minutes. In the space several items have been placed: a wall clock, a large air fan, a model of the planetary system, and a plant on a pedestal. The public are invited to sit outside the room looking in and follow the operatic performance using headphones. The singer (a counter- tenor) can be seen singing on the video screen, and as he sings he gestures towards the objects in the room and as he does so they are activated into life. The songs being sung are from the Baroque period and the texts of the songs are performed in a style which reflects the linguistic conventions and literary techniques prevalent during the Baroque era, characterized by elaborate ornamentation, rich imagery, and intricate syntax, and often employing metaphysical concepts. Some of these concepts are as relevant now as they were then, in fact perhaps more so now through aspects of our increased awareness of our dependency on an interrelationship between nature and science.
As the singer gestures and activates the objects, the observer experiences a form for duality. On the one hand we can see the cables connecting the objects as they run behind the screen and we understand that the video is controlling the movements, but on the other hand part of us believe that the singer is actually in the room, and through his gestures is commanding the movement. The “every day, home-made” characteristic of the objects provides a slightly humoristic and paradoxical contrast to the contemplative philosophical content evoked from the song texts.
